Most marines stationed in Okinawa belong to the third marine expedition army with command in camp Courtney. The third marine expedition army was a descendant of the 1st and the second marine amphibian force that had been organized in October, 1942, and it was rechristened as the third marine amphibian force in April, 1944. The third marine amphibian force participated in the war of Saipan, Tanian, Ioto, and Okinawa.
